United States Navy Model 1852 Officer’s Sword by J.A. Merrill-This 170 plus year old sword is untouched and uncleaned. This sword has a brass hit that is decorated with an oak leaf and acorn motif and displays USN. The scrolled sea serpent-head quillon, knuckle bow with sea serpent finial connects to the decorative pommel. The top of the pommel shows a US eagle surrounded by 13 stars. The grip is covered with sharkskin and brass wire wrap. The black leather covered scabbard is in sound only condition. There is quite a bit of wear to the leather. The brass fittings are in good condition, the top fitting shows a rope on the first band, and the tip of the scabbard continues with the sea serpent motif. Be aware this top fitting is loose. The 30-inch (76.2 cm) blade is beautifully engraved with a handsome USN anchor motif on both sides of the blade. The maker’s name, JA Merrill is from Portland Maine, can be seen etched just under the crossguard. Overall, this blade is in sound condition and would make for a beautiful display piece.
