German WWII Signed Photo of Knights Cross Winner Werner Roell- Werner Roell (1914–2008) was a highly decorated German Luftwaffe Major and Ju 87 Stuka pilot. He was a Hauptman when he awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on May 25, 1943, for bravery and leadership. He flew 477 combat missions, served in Norway, the Eastern Front, and with the Me 262 squadron JV44 in 1945. He flew over 400 Stuka missions, including the invasion of Norway, and operations in Yugoslavia, Crete, and Russia, and is credited with shooting down a Soviet bomber, and sinking a Soviet cruiser near the Crimea. In early 1945, he was summoned to join Adolph Galland’s elite JV44 squadron. After the war, he worked as a pilot in South America, became a reserve Lieutenant-Colonel in the Bundeswehr, and spent his later years in Switzerland. He passed away in Switzerland, on May 10th, 2008 at the age of 94. This black and white photo has a black signature at the bottom. There is small sticker on the reverse with his phone number. This photos measures 5 ½ inches (13.97cm) tall and 3 ½ inches (8.89cm) wide. It is in excellent condition.
