German WWII Presentation Cigarette Case-This silver case measures approx.3 ½ inches square. It stands 2 ¼ inches tall on small legs. It is approx. 1 ¼ inches deep. Just enough to hold quite a few cigarettes. The interesting thing about this decorative box is the dedication on the top. This is presented to the Standarte 5th Gruppe of Ostland for years of service from 1936 through 1938. This was presented to this Gruppe from SA Stabschef Victor Lutze. Victor Lutze played a very important role on the Rohm purge, or night of the long knives. After the purge of July 1934, Lutze succeeded Ernst Rohm as Stabschef and Reichsleiter of the SA. He also became an associate of Franz Pfeffer von Salomon, who was the first leader of the SA. Together, they determined the structure of the Sturmabteilung. Lutze died after he was injured in a car accident in 1943. It is worth doing a google search to see what his involvement was in July of 1934. Very interesting. Ok, let’s get back to the case. The case is marked 800 silver on the bottom and is very ornate with decorations on the top and the sides. Along the sides you can see the three dates on three of the sides, 1936, 1937, and 1938. The top is also deeply etched with a National SA eagle along with the presentation. The closure clip for the lid appears to be missing, so please keep this in mind. This is an unusual offering and a great conversation piece. This is a special cigarette box in very good condition.
