German DLV Visor Cap Insignia- Following World War I, Germany was prohibited from having an air force by the Treaty of Versailles, meaning they could not maintain any military aircraft as part of their armed force. To bypass this, they started the DLV in 1933, which was the precursor to the Luftwaffe. The DLV, “Deutscher Luftsport Verband” (German Air-sport Association), was established by forcibly incorporating all civilian flying clubs, as well as the flying units of the SA and SS to join. After 1935, when the aerial re-armament was lifted, the DLV served as an Air force reserve and training ground for future members of the Luftwaffe. This type “A” insignia, would be worn on the front of the visor cap. It shows a black enamel mobile swastika against an upright, silver propeller. On each side, you can see silver, three-tiered wings with a wingspan of 70mm. This sits on a bright red enamel ring. To the reverse of each wing is a horizontal prong which are original to the piece. This is very nicely maker marked for Paul Meybauer and Ges.Gesch. This is in very good condition and is a scarce example of an early cap insignia.
