German WWII SA Sports Badge in Silver-This is an example of the later, or third type of badge that was in use from 1939 until 1945. 1939 is when Hitler added the different grades and requirements to the sports badge. There is light wear to the finish, and I would say the silver wash remains approx. 70% in place. This is nicely marked on the reverse for the maker W. Redo, and of course the inscription "Eigentum der Obersten S.A.-Führung" (Property of the SA Leadership). There is some darkening under the pin on the reverse, but overall, this is in good condition. The pin setup works as intended. A handsome pin.

History: The SA Sports badge in bronze was instituted by SA-Stabschef Ernst Röhm in November of 1933 and was awarded to SA and SS personnel who passed the required criteria in physical fitness, military defense and field exercises. In February of 1935, to inspire the German public to greater levels of physical fitness. Hitler conferred official national status to the badge and expanded it to include a silver and gold grade. When the badges gained official national status, bestowal was opened to all German nationals who were strongly encouraged to qualify for award of one of the three grades.
