Pair of Wooden Shoes-It is hard to imagine that this would be the everyday attire for a German peasant, farmer or housewife. The wooden shoes were made by both a shoemaker in town and in some cases by the farmer himself. These would be worn with a home knitted heavy sock that would look similar to a reinforced slipper.  These are decorated on the top with a light brown square design with “Xs” in the center. These shoes appear to be a larger set, I would say a men’s size 9-10? They are well worn, and you can see this by the scuffing on the top and sides. The wooden soles are very well worn. It is very interesting that you can still see the chisel marks under the shoes arch on the bottom. Did you know that in some cases, the family may have owned one pair of leather shoes, if they were lucky. These were to be SHARED by family members. Makes you feel pretty lucky that you don’t have to be home early because your brother needs to borrow your shoes to go to school!  Do a deep dive on google to appreciate the wooden shoe! It’s a much more interesting subject than you originally thought!   This is a great set.
