German WWI Fighting Knife-This is an interesting early fighting knife. It is made in the style of the fireman’s bayonet but actually is a trench knife with a 6-inch (15.24cm) blade. The heavy steel handle has a bird’s head shape. There is checkered grip plates attached to the handle with two studs. These could use a cleaning but are near excellent. The steel crossguard has slight rusting, as does the pommel. The steel scabbard retains the majority of its black paint, but there is a substantial smudge of white paint on the obverse of the scabbard. The leather retaining strap has broken off. The blade is good only as there are some dark spots and signs of sharpening. The blade is loose.  A sound example. Bargain priced.
