US Navy MK-2 Helmet-This helmet was designed for the navy and produced by the McCord Radiator Company in Detroit. It was made in this form so navy personnel could fit their communication equipment underneath it. Thus, it became known as the “talker” helmet. The finish is sea blue with impregnated cork. The finish is intact. The inside has a soft and smooth blue grey leather which is still very supple. There is a bold “MK-2” stamp at the front and “U.S.N.” at the back. It is a large and ungainly helmet but it provided good protection for the user, whether it was a navy radio man or any sailor using ship-board communication devices. There is a chinstrap which is “jury rigged” into place. Excellent!
