WWII German First Model Luftwaffe General’s Dagger by Robt. Klaa- Just when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes one for the books! This magnificent piece is a direct Veteran purchase and to my knowledge is the only known original gilded 1st Model Luftwaffe Dagger to survive the war!  Not only is this a RARE and an early piece, but the condition throughout is choice!  The hilt fittings are the early heavy style being a solid base metal with a heavy nickel plating.  The pommel and crossguard have a period applied gilded finish that rates approximately 95%.  The pommel edges display minor wear while the surfaces are smooth.  The pommel and crossguard have outstanding sunwheel swastikas which are the medallion insert style (Volume II, page 49, upper).  Beautiful!  The gilding to the pommel surface grades 98%.  The wooden based grip is wrapped with blue/black Moroccan grip leather.  It displays some wear/age to the highlights in the form of a few minor scrapes to all sides.  It is tightly wrapped with triple silver wire with the center being larger and twisted with the outer two strands are smooth.  The only detractor is that the very top outer two strands are misshaped.  The grip easily grades strong excellent.  The choice, nickel plated blade is bright and shiny, being of the highest quality production!  There are a few faint in and out marks along with minor scratches here and there!  The edges and tip are for the most part crisp with the exception of the tip area, which shows a faint hit to both edges along with some sharpening signs!  The reverse ricasso is stamped with the Robert Klaas logo being the famous kissing crane trademark.  It consists of kissing cranes and beneath in block letters is the company name and location Robt. Klaas / Solingen.  The blue Moroccan leather washer is intact, grading strong excellent.  The blade easily grades strong excellent to near mint!  The scabbard shell is straight throughout.  It is covered with nicely grained blue/black Moroccan leather displaying the slightest signs of wear/age in the form of a few faint scrapes, grading near mint.  The matching nickel fittings are beautiful examples showing NO signs of carrying or storage wear.  Very nice!  The upper and middle fittings show remnants of a gilded finish while the lower fitting exhibits 55% gilding to the finish.  The fittings are retained with five, headless, flush-mounted side screws.  The chain is the early variation having the S fittings that were used to retain the chain to the scabbard (Volume II, page 98).  The chain has nine upper and fourteen lower ringlets exhibiting minor wear (Volume II, page 57, upper).  It appears that the ringlets were also gilded, but not the connector rings.  The matching snap clip is fully functional having a grey pot metal base (Volume II, pages 57 and 59).  It is reverse marked D.R.G.M. built into the cast with the letter A below.  A RARE and UNIQUE piece for the advanced or type collector!   Excellent.
