This slant gripped design is a RARE find indeed being illustrated in the Angolia Sword Book, page 104. It was first introduced in 1939. The solid brass hilt gilded finish is all but gone leaving a gorgeous, brass patina throughout. The entire hilt is masterly hand chiseled with a beautiful floral motif throughout the pommel, backstrap, flat knuckle bow guard and quillon. Although the finish is worn away the edges remain crisp while the surfaces are smooth. The obverse langet features a raised out, closed winged Army eagle which clutches a swastika with fine background pebbling. The quillon ends in a ball shape adorned with an oak leaf. The black celluloid over wood base grip grades mint-. It has ribbing which runs on a slant from left to right. It is tightly wrapped with a single strand of delicate brass wire. Attached to the hilt, in the correct Army tie, is an original to the piece Army knot being the style with a large ball and a thick strap. The knot shows some wear/age, grading excellent. The long 33.5” nickel plated blade remains bright and shiny, grading mint-. The blade and spine edges are crisp as is the tip. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the famous Klaas kissing cranes logo. The firm’s name Robt. Klaas and the company location Solingen form a circle with the kissing cranes appearing in the center. A thin leather washer is present. The scabbard is straight. The black paint shows wear/age especially to the drag area, grading 95%. A RARE sword for the ADVANCED collector! Excellent.
