WWII German Luftwaffe Documented General’s Sword- This exact piece appears on pages 353, 354 of Exploring the Dress Daggers of the German Luftwaffe by T.T. Wittmann. This is from my personal collections of nearly 30 years and is a great second model variant. As it has characteristics of both the first and second models. The hilt is made of brass with beautiful gilting. The fixtures are heavily ornated. This has the double folding guard, which still functions properly. The silver over brass Luftwaffe eagle on the clamshell is a sight to behold with unparalleled detail. This is triple riveted to the clam shell. The handle with wire wrap, which is slightly loose, is in excellent shape. The black leather scabbard shows light cracking throughout but is still very supple with all of the stitching on the reverse in place. The brass scabbard fittings have some slight indentations more noticeable on the lower fitting. Overall still very sound condition. The blade, having the earlier Eickhorn trademark, is in overall near excellent condition with blued and engraved panels on both sides. One side translates in gold lettering, which is 75% intact, to “In grateful recognition”. The bluing in this panel, which is surrounded by heavy filigree engraving is also 75% in place. The other side of the blade, also heavily engraved with a blue paneled center motif has the very desirable gilted engraving which translates to the “National Minister of Aeronautics Hermann Goring “.I'll grade the bluing on the background and gilting on lettering as a conservative 50%. This is an object of beauty and rarity missing from the majority of collections. Overall condition is a strong very good.
