S-103 Interesting Porcelain Plate for German Ski Championship, 1939
This white porcelain plate measures approximately 7.75” across. The central
design features two men competing in a skiing contest, the one on the left
(number 10) is wearing his field grey winter combat uniform and a field cap,
complete with eagle and swastika, while the man on the right (number 11) wears a
blue snowsuit with an NSRL insignia on his left sleeve. This is over a circular
sky blue background that is outlined with a gold stripe. The script on the upper
section of the plate reads “Deutsche v. Wehrmachts Ski-Meisterschaften”,
which translates to “Germans versus German Armed Forces Ski Championship”.
The lower script reads “Oberhof in Thüringen~2.-5. Februar 1939” indicating
this took place in Oberhof, Thuringia, (which is a town in central Germany that
is known as a winter sports center) on February 2nd through 5th 1939. The
reverse contains a paper label from the manufacturer, Arno Fischer
Porzellanfabrik in Jimenau, Thuringia. As this was meant to be hung on a wall,
there are two small holes in the lower lip of the plate through which a string
could be threaded. A near mint example of an interesting item!
