S-079 Panzer NCO’s Portrait – Period
Painting
Very cool piece on stretched canvas, measuring about 16” vertical
by 15” horizontal. The painting shows a Panzer NCO in an early model black
wrapper (the collar edges are piped in Panzer pink – a practice later
discontinued). The artist was reasonably skilled, choosing a view from the
shoulders up with the face at three-quarters. The flesh tone blending on the
face is decent. The NCO is wearing a grey shirt, and the Panzer wrapper with
pink piped Hussar skull tabs: the artist added red to the eyeholes of the
skulls, something that was apparently not that unusual, and would explain the
occasional real examples on Hussar skulls and SS headgear! The artist does not
seem to have given as much detail to the uniform, as to the face. The stretched
canvas is in sound condition, the paint also in fairly good shape with a few
nicks and minor scratches here and there, but nothing that distracts at all from
the picture. Very interesting piece!
