S-053 Stunning 1935 Pattern “Deutschland Erwache” Standard
Finial
This once-in-a-lifetime offering is the eagle and wreathed swastika finial (standartenspitze)
that was seen in use on the “Deutschland Erwache” SS-Reiter standards, SS
and NSKK Motorstandarte standards. These were exclusively produced by the firm
of Otto Gahr in Munich, while the design was executed by Paul Casberg. The eagle
is produced in a hollow metal, with spectacular detail everywhere you look. The
outstretched wings and approximately 7.5” wingspan give it a commanding
presence! The gilt finish to the eagle is mostly intact, we’ll call it 75%
there. There is a very small crack in the area where the right (as viewed) wing
starts to sweep upwards. This is in no way a detriment to the structural
integrity of the piece, just a minor cosmetic issue. The solid copper wreath and
swastika, which is a separately applied section, retains tremendous detail and a
majority (95%) of its nickel/silver finish. There are a few areas where you can
see the brass underlay, which was used to adhere the nickel/silver to the
copper, and a few areas that are down to the copper base. From there, starting
at the base of the wreath, there is a collar which funnels out to a sleeve which
would have fit over the wooden pole. At the back of the funnel is the
inscription “Gahr München 1935” indicating the manufacturer’s
information. The lower reverse of the sleeve has an additional sleeve that is
mounted horizontally and was meant to intersect with the horizontal wooden pole
of the standard. This entire lower section (collar and sleeve) has been expertly
(and expensively) fabricated and attached to the finial as the original was
missing when we acquired it. The original G.I. probably just snapped it off the
original mounting pole. The gilt finish is fairly well-aged on this so it
matches the rest of the piece very well. You wouldn’t know if we didn’t tell
you, that’s how good it is! Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to
