E-206 Imperial Army Grosser Size Artillery
Lionhead Sword With Triple Engraved Blade, With Distributor Mark (C. Budruss,
Danzig)
Imperial Swords have outstanding quality throughout, and this one is
NO exception! The Grosser size hilt is a heavy, solid brass construction
having outstanding relief and much hand-enhancing. The gilding to the
entire hilt is gone-to-time, leaving a very appealing toning to the brass.
The massive Lionhead is the style having a full jaw with beautiful, deep detail
throughout! It is fitted with fine pointed, red glass eyes rendering a
menacing appearance to the cat. The pommel displays very minimal wear and
age. The very heavy “P” guard features elaborate oak leaves and acorns
that extend to almost the entire length of the guard. The heavy, backstrap
features nicely detailed floral motif. The quillon concludes with a small,
highly detailed Lionhead. The obverse and reverse edges of the guard
contain well-detailed oak leaves. The obverse langet is adorned with two
hand-enhanced crossed cannons with a bursting bomb directly below. The
reverse langet is decorated with a plain cameo housed in a decorative frame
containing two crossed oak leaves mounted on the top. The grip is
sharkskin with some wear/age to a few of the highlights. It is center
wrapped with a thick strand of twisted brass wire with only two strands of thin,
twisted brass wire remaining at the lower end of the grip. It’s my
contention that the grip originally had three strands of twisted brass wire,
which have disappeared over time. The ferrule is decorated with a
hand-enhanced floral motif. The 34” larger size triple engraved blade is
the style having a wide fuller. The spine edges are crisp while the blade
edge and tip display hits/nicks. In addition, the tip displays a repair
leaving a wavy look. The engraving to both sides is approximately 12” in
length. The obverse side has four panels having the normal floral, crossed
cannon, cross flags/banners, rifles, drum and lances design. The spine is
decorated with a floral pattern and is engraved with the distributor’s mark C.
Budruss, Danzig. The reverse side also contains four panels illustrating
crossed flags, swords, cannon, lances, backpack, rifle and armor. The thin
leather washer is intact. The blade grades excellent! The heavy/wide
scabbard is the style that originally had double hanger rings with the lower one
having been period modified by having the lower ring removed with the ring
holder filed flat. The lower drag has a flat side, resulting from carrying
wear. The shell itself displays a couple of minor carrying taps.
Finally, the shell has a black post-war paint job, grading 98%. The thick
scabbard throat is retained with two domehead side screws showing turning signs.
A NICE display piece that is FAIRLY priced! Excellent-.
