D-179 Very Rare
Kriegsmarine Soldbuch for U-Boot Matrosen Gefreiter Johann Höring who was the
Recipient of the U-Boat Close Combat Clasp
This book shows some definite wear, but it occurred during the
wartime period, and right after. The spine has a piece of heavy, yellowed tape
on it to help reinforce the spine and hold the cover panels together. The
reverse board shows soiling and some staining, with a small rectangular section
of the corner cut out (in the photos, see the green arrows). Höring
apparently tore his picture out of the book after the war – though he
continued to using the Soldbuch as a civilian identification for a few years –
hence the heavy wear. The staples have given way leaving the interior pages
loose from the binding (though still together). The first page is stamped with
the red ink “U” (indicating U-Boat service). The book is really packed with
entries – personal info, lots of clothing issue, and pay receipts including
one certified by the 13th U-Flottilla (there is also a statement regarding pay
that is almost certainly post-war). Höring would appear to have
served aboard at least U-636 ( http://uboat.net/boats/u636.htm )
with confirmation of Oberleutnant zur See Eberhard Schendel's signature against
the EK II and Spange awards. He obviously was not with that boat in April
of 1945 (when she was sunk) if he survived the war! His awards are
impressive: the U-Boat Badge, Iron Cross Second Class; the U-Boot Close Combat
Badge (Frontspange) in Bronze and in Silver. There are also two very interesting
inserts added into the book – these being typed a very thin (almost onion
skin) paper and pasted in – which verify the identity of Höring and his
position up to the date indicated. Really neat, and quite an array of U-Boot
awards.
