D-174a Kriegsmarine (Navy) U-Boot Soldbuch
for Oberfunkmaat Karl Brezmann
An interesting book, as the cover is marked out with a red “X”,
which was not a positive sign! This is repeated on the first page, which also
includes a handwritten note in red indicating his status as missing effective
August 9, 1944 – though the location is somewhat obscured by overwriting. The
book has a nice picture of Brezmann in blue uniform, and includes a good number
of the usual entries – personal info, clothing and equipment issue, leaves,
training assignments, and so on. Entries at the rear note a field post
number of M 21 325, which was the training boat, U-72, a Type VIIC boat, where
he served for a time as a radio man. He was later transferred to another
type VIIC boat, U-347 (Feldpost Nr. 53 298), under Oberleutnant Johann de Buhr
which was subsequently lost off Narvik (Norway) – hence the “missing” red
X (though official date of the loss was apparently in late July). The book is in
good condition and other than for some oxidation bleed around the staples at the
center of the book, and around the small staples securing the photo.
