Luftwaffe DIENSTSTELLUNGSABZEICHEN (Trade / Specialist Insignia):
Also known as “Tätigkeitsabzeichen”, these “distinguishing specialist” or “trade” insignia were authorized for wear on the lower left sleeve by Luftwaffe NCOs and privates who were classed as specialists, or who served in a specialist career (Laufbahn). The system was somewhat similar to the trade and rating system used by the Navy (also worn on the sleeve), and considerable similarity to the system used by the Army (though the latter service seems to have had fewer ratings, and was more sparing in its use of them). The authorization to wear such “Dienststellungsabzeichen” was only granted upon successfully concluded examinations at the end of special training courses – or after transfer to a specialist position officially authorized (according to the unit’s “Table of Organization & Equipment” – or “T.O.&E.”) such an insignia – or, in the case of some badges, after a specifically defined time period within the specialist’s position.

These badges were usually machine embroidered in greyish-white or silvery-white thread directly onto a grey, or “fliegerblau” (flyer’s blue – i.e. the Luftwaffe’s standard greyish-blue color) wool-felt backing patch. The backing itself was usually round, and in some cases, oblong (longer in a horizontal direction). Examples hand embroidered in aluminum bullion are usually privately purchased pieces for wear on a dress uniform and were not officially authorized.

NOTE: For some of these insignia, I may have more than one example and have so indicated in this case. Please note that photos show only one example – but the actual pieces may vary in the color shade of the backing wool, or materials (manufacturing variations); rest assured that the item you receive will be of equal quality in terms of condition, however, to the one pictured. The patches are in excellent, unissued condition unless otherwise noted.

These cufftitles represent an incredible opportunity for collectors; most of them came from the same cache recently found in Louisville, KY (held by a fellow who bought them years ago from Veterans who “captured” and brought back entire, paper-banded bundles of such cufftitles as souvenirs during the war). All the cufftitles are in the RZM pattern and are full length (about 19” to 20”), with the Unit number embroidered directly onto the surface of the band in medium gauge, aluminum bullion-wrapped wire (very nice relief above the band surface). The rippled upper and lower edge borders of the cufftitle are also aluminum wire. The condition is excellent and every example has at least one paper RZM tag affixed – sometimes two! One tag was applied by the manufacturer of the band itself, the other by the firm doing the embroidery (the “B” rated label for the former, another letter being the latter). The ends are folded over and sewn down. These cufftitles were worn primarily by Officers, though could also be a private purchase option for all ranks. A rare offering that will likely never be repeated!
